Calcium is a secondary nutrient after NPK and it is essential for plant life. Plants require calcium for proper growth, healthy root function, cell wall structure, enzymatic functions, mechanical strength and many other activities including nitrogen fixation by legumes. When using calcium fertilizers be aware of the fact that over fertilizing the soil with calcium can cause alkaline soil pH and reduce uptake of other nutrients.
